Story
Two years after Commander Shepard repelled invading Reapers bent on the destruction of organic life, a mysterious new danger has emerged. On the fringes of known space, something is silently abducting entire human colonies. Now Shepard must work with Cerberus, a ruthless organization devoted to human survival at any cost, to stop the most terrifying threat mankind has ever faced. To even attempt this perilous mission, Shepard must assemble the galaxy’s most elite team and command the most powerful ship ever built. Even then, doubters say it would be suicide. Commander Shepard intends to prove them wrong.

Gameplay
An space-based action RPG like its predecessor, gameplay in Mass Effect 2 revolves around the player's particular version of Commander Shepard and continuing development of this character as the game proceeds. As the game opens a variety of character classes are made available to the player, with talents, both exclusive and general, associated with each. With experience these talents are leveled up, resulting in the unlocking of related abilities and/or entirely new talents. The player has the ability to customize their Commander Shepard in a number of ways including physical appearance, gender, and certain aspects of their personal history, with the rub being that these choices can influence things like available missions, dialogue choices with non-player characters (NPCs), and character background.

Accompanying this main character are a number of preset supporting characters that the player can direct and develop relationships with, which again, will alter the outcome of the story. All the characters from the original game make an appearance in Mass Effect 2, but the immediate characters surrounding Commander Shepard are new. Additional new features that players can expect to experience include new alien races; a more realistic damage system; a new heavy weapons system allowing for maximum damage; a regenerative health system; a dramatic increase in the number of character animations available to Shepard; and updates to the dialogue mechanic used when conversing with NPCs.

Integration with the Original Mass Effect
Mass Effect 2 allows players of the original Mass Effect game to import save games to continue the story of their own Commander Shepard. In doing this, the decisions that were made in the first game will affect the events of the second game. In addition, characters from the first game will return, as long as they were not killed off by the player in the first game. On the other hand, new players coming to the series for the first time in Mass Effect 2 will start a brand-new character, discover the events of the previous games as they progress and embark on a thrilling stand-alone adventure that does not require the previous game for play.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Great   March 2, 2010

Great RPG, Great Story, Great Characters. If you have, or even if you haven't, played the first installment (Mass Effect) then you have an idea of what you are getting into. If you haven't played the first installment, I'm told you will still get a summary of the main events from the first game, so you are not missing much. However, the story in the first game was epic, the characters were lively, and the gameplay was great. Now, it's pushed to the next level. If you played the first game, your choices carry over into this one. Someone you may have taken the time to help out during your adventures might make an appearance here. If you had some of your team mates die, they won't make an appearance here. It's a great way to move along the trilogy and see how it all connects. Finally, if you love RPGs, or just want a game for the story within it, then this is a great buy. With the collector's edition you get an extra armor and weapon in-game plus access to the Cerberus Network. Not to mention a great art book, metalic case, and some more.

4 out of 5 stars Mass Effect 2   February 28, 2010

Hey so I bought this game and it's pretty awesome. It's a little more linear than the first game, in relation to when (in ME1) you could land on some planets and just drive along the surface. In the second game you can land on considerably less planets, and when you get there, the path is guarded by rocks and debris, both sides, all the time. The dialogue tree and the 'paragon' - 'renegade', aspect is a lot better and its much harder to figure out exactly what the outcome of a conversation will be. Fighting style is very free flowing, and they incorporated some of the wall hugging from Gears of War, and the guns are pretty sweet. When playing this game, it is wise to choose only Paragon OR Renegade because later on you will not have the necessary good/evil points to have the extended options on the conversation tree. Overall great game, and I have beat it about 2.5 times right now. Each with a different class of hero (Vanguard, Sentinel, Adept [my personal favorite], Soldier, Infiltrator, Engineer).

Definite contender for game of the year, and it's only January!!! Apart from the tedious mining mini-game, it is nearly perfect. Extraordinarily crafted characters, excellent story, fun gameplay. A must play.

5 out of 5 stars Just Improves on the Original   February 2, 2010

Mass Effect 2, ME2, the much anticipated title is out, and if you loved the original there's much more with the second, everything has been improved. ME2 picks up a little after the end of the original, an almost marginalized Shepard is hunting Geth, the Reapers were swept under the rug, and basically Shepard becomes more of a figure-head for humanity's expansion into space. The beginning of the game is one of the best ways to start a game, not to ruin it, but events transpire which lead to Shepard's demise. Flash foward two years Shepard is revived by Cereberus, the cloak and dagger, human's first organization that Shepard foiled a few times in the original Mass Effect, everything about this series is improved even the story delivery. Human colonies are vanishing without a trace, and Shepard is charged to discover and stop what's going on, it gets very dark at the end.

The story delivery and pacing is what Bioware has focused upon, with new and old characters returning, and some hard decisions having to be made along the way, sacrifices and team members dying. Suicide mission is one of these missions that will penalize you, the longer the player waits to start the mission the worse it gets for the crew of the Normandy. The game will also sometimes force the player to do story missions rather than focusing on the loyalty missions or collecting the materials to upgrade equipment, there's no way around the story forces the player to act, the game does this very well.

Perhaps the most interesting device used in this game is the import feature, where a character that was created and played with in Mass Effect is transferred over to ME2. The character will not be the exact same character do to the change in the levelling system. The import feature brings more the pivotal decisions made in the original into the sequel, adding more as far as the story-telling and consequences. It may not vastly change the story, but it's a pretty neat thing to have a true sequel that has so many references to the original. This adds more to the story, makes the character that was created that much more a living being.

The presentation is top notch, the art-style is still Mass Effect, but the characters have a much more refined and improved appearance characters look more organic and alive. Once again Bioware did a lot of work on the character designs, locations, which are grittier and darker rather than the sanitized look that the Citadel had in the original. Places like Omega show the darker parts of the Mass Effect universe. Also the missions have more unique locations rather then the same bunker on different planets. The sound and music is great unique and true to the franchise. The sound scheme just adds to the presentation great voice acting, interesting background conversations, impressively loud battles all help with the players immersion into the much, much improved combat system.

ME2 has a shooter based combat system, ammo is an issue, and so is ammo type, and a very intense delivery of the combat. The shields aren't the be all an end all, the enemies have the same weapons, ammo and powers as your team does, reliance on the shields will only increase the amount of times the mission will be failed. Enemies are more aggressive and flank more often, necessitating your team to constantly move to better cover. The biotic powers have been improved and powered up, and are easier to use with the menu system. It's no secret that Mass Effect had some problems with the touchy menu and the weak biotic powers, but now with ME2 the biotic powers are powerful and great to use on enemies.

ME2 is fantastic don't get me wrong, but with the amour and weapon upgrading system there is very little inventory micromanagement, it's all been slimmed down to the upgrading system. I miss the buying new equipment, weapons, modifying them. Getting upgrades and researching the upgrades is the way of improving the equipment and it's still good, it's just a departure from the more RPG aspects of the game which isn't bad, just different. The game has also lost it's vast open worlds, where the player would traverse alien planet with the Mako looking for side missions, element, Prothean ruins, what ever, it's all been taken out, I liked those too. The team can still travel to distant planets but no longer can you land and explore unless there's an anamoly on the planet, but no Mako. The side missions are now great set pieces to the game with varying locations which all look great even if there are few missions. The planet scanning and mining is an obsessive's best friend, just a tip not all the planets need to be mined to depletion, you'd be crazy if you did, I tried but it's just too boring. Also the disc switching is a little strange, but if you install both discs you won't get the error message that the 360 can't read the disc.

Overall ME2 is not just an improvement on the original, it's a fantastic game, and a great reason to get a 360. Bioware also plans on giving this franchise lots of DLC support, which is just fantastic. I'm already salavating over the 3rd and final installment to the series. Bioware has raised the bar for western RPG's and RPG based shooters. ME2 implements the long story presentation and build up that comes with RPG's but keeps it fast paced and intense with the combat system which is very shooter. This is a must own.

-- Collectors Edition --

Yeah I got the CE package for this game, I had to, and it's a nice package, the exterior is just cardboard but it's done up pretty. The disc case is a metal case with three discs, two game and 1 bonus 'how it's made' disc. There's an additional package, the Cereberus Network pack, that has the DLC interface, apparently Bioware is going release not only the big DLC but free DLC. There's also an artbook that shows the development of the ME2 characters, and a comic. While the CE is nice, but not a necessary purchase unless you like collecting, or Mass Effect.
