2 out of 5 stars meh...squenix slowly killing the franchise   March 11, 2010

got this game today and been playing for a couple of hours now...and unfortunately, ive lost interest in playing this game. only 2 final fantasy games that lost my interest before, and they were ff x-2 and ff 12.
im a huge final fantasy fan, played 1-12... the series has sadly been going downhill since X.

to potential buyers who want to try out jrpgs, final fantasy 13 is not ur traditional jrpg, so dont look down on jrpgs because of ff13. theres a lot of good ones out there, persona series, even try the older ffs, like ff 4-9. for ff13 they took too many things out to try to mainstream and streamline this game.

game is too linear, no towns, shop is in the save points, characters arent rly that interesting, plot boring, little equipment choice and customization, u can only control lightning. game feels lifeless.

on the good side, the game's graphics is very good, hardly any loading times, good voice acting, u get used to the battle system (at least squenix was trying something new)...

before ff13 came out here in north america, i was checking amazon japan for ff 13 reviews, it was getting horrible scores there, and i was hoping they were wrong about ff 13. sadly they were right, this game is not that good. i just bought mass effect 2 last week, and am putting ff 13 down to replay mass effect 2 again.

i just hope squenix learns there lesson and go back to the old roots of what made ff games great.

If you've ever been a Final Fantasy fan, followed the games as they've progressed from console to console. Starting from the original NES to the transfer to the PC and now the next gen consoles. You would know that everytime, whether the story was good or bad, SE has astounded us with impressive ahead of it's time graphics. If you're a visual gamer and you live to play the newest games and watch as the worlds become more realistic with every jump in technology. You won't be disappointed.

From the smallest detail to the largest, SE has taken their time to deliver yet another ahead of it's time game. With aweing graphics, cinematics and visual effects, we can count on the fact that they have yet again set a visual standard for other games to build off of.

I won't get into the story with much detail in this review so as not to spoil it for anyone who really wants the surprise. You can find all those details on the official website, or in the gamespot review. What I will talk about in brief are some of the pro's and con's we find as we play this game through.

The cast of characters are very well balanced and I very much enjoy the fact that it hasn't been a sole focused love story. Don't get me wrong, SE can't create a FF saga that doesn't have an intense cast pursueing love and happiness ever after. But unlike FFVIII it doesn't shine so boldly in this story that the game suffers from losing any other purpose. If I had to relate this to another game in the series, I would have to say this is the closest I've seen to FFVII which fans all adored so much (minus crisis core on the psp). My reasons? You'll understand if you really play and compare when you're finished.

The voice transfer from the original Japanese game released on Dec 16 2009 is done fairly well, but with a few flaws still. It's hard to truly translate the game and keep the original effect completely. So for die hard fans you'll likely yet again be pleased, but not totally satisfied. Luckily for you the JE version is playable on US and Canadian region consoles so you can always import the game for a few extra bucks and read subtitles. For the rest of us, you'll find that there really are no audio problems throughout the game; a few dialect translation nips here and there but nothing that will really stand out in a big way. In fact one of the biggest bonus of this game is the verbal communication; I don't know about the rest of you but reading chat boxes for hours and hours is cool, but I always preferred speach.

The real downfall to this game and only flaw I saw was the decrease in graphics in "what they COULD have been" to what they actually are. This was mainly caused because SE wanted to release the game on both consoles without making one stand out better than the other. Unfortunately in this event we can blame the Xbox 360 for forcing them to downgrade. Originally the PS3 release was designed to use 100% of what the PS3 has to offer has been hiding up it's sleave. Something which no other game to date has ever done. Regretably we won't get to see what potential this system really has on this game, but with hope games that build off of this achievement may produce such a game in the near future.

In any event, to wrap this up I will say the game is extremely fun and of course extremely addicting. You're looking at a minimum of 90+ hours for completion and that's not really tagging in exploration time. Because I'm such a Final Fantasy nerd and I'm trying to keep a non-biased review, I'll rate it 4 stars of fun for the average player; new or old. With a five star rating overall for impressive graphics, a great storyline, and the overall time and effort put into perfecting the smallest details. I have been rather unimpressed with some of the recent FF saga's released the last few years, with IX leaving you facepalming in the end, X-2 making you want to take your own life, and FFXII not totally living up to the hype it had. This is the best game I've seen SE release in the series in quite awhile.

I hope this review helps you in deciding whether or not to purchase this game.
